Tax protesting is such a bother: The Winged One thinks Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker needs two spoons with the steaming bowl of P.R. dung he’s dishing out these days. The GA recalls ‘Ol Vernon swearing up and down that the “Save Our Jobs: Stop the Tax Hike” committee he created wasn’t just a cheap public relations stunt cooked up in the same Pink Taco grease used by his political handler Jason Rose (if you don’t get the reference, Google “pink taco and Cardinal stadium”). But what else is this Haloed Hellion supposed to think after learning that Parker quietly terminated the account 10 days ago, about the same time he announced he was running for U.S. Rep. John Shadegg’s open congressional seat. It’d be real easy to say Parker no longer cares about killing a statewide sales tax now that he’s running for an office with a view of the Potomac. But the GA thinks it’s not that simple. It appears, at least to this Omniscient Observer, that Parker never cared about stopping any potential tax hike. He was more worried about ginning up free press for his gubernatorial campaign that seemed forever stuck in neutral until he finally gave up. How did the Winged One come to this somewhat cynical conclusion you might ask? Take a guess at how much money the “goVERNor” raised for his anti-tax committee. If you guess anything more than zero, you’d be wrong. That’s right, in the month and a half he had the committee up and running (and as he was presumably stumping across the Grand Canyon State) he raised nothing. Nada, zip, zilch. When asked to explain, Parker didn’t bother returning phone calls but rather directed a flack from his congressional campaign to spin his side of the story. “He’s still opposed to any tax increase on principal,” said Todd Sommers, a spokesman for the Parker campaign. “As a congressman, there’s a lot more Mr. Parker can do for the Arizona taxpayer.” Nice try. But lets see if the voters in Congressional District 3 will buy that one.
