U.S. Sen. John McCain on Tuesday credited unprecedented civic activism with shaping the healthcare debate and possibly altering or even halting President Barack Obama’s proposed overhaul of the healthcare system.

Obama’s plan, if left unchanged, would lay trillions of dollars of new debt on Americans and could destroy the private healthcare insurance industry, McCain said during a town hall meeting at Grace Bible Church in Sun City.

Shouting matches, megaphones and dueling picket signs were the order of the day Monday as thousands of President Obama’s supporters and opponents clashed in downtown Phoenix in advance of the president’s speech.
